Private equity and venture capital investments are always a risk, but that risk can be greatly minimized with a strong talent core, both within the PE/VC firm itself and within the portfolio company. Even when the start-up does not have a strong existing senior leadership team, however, this core can be built on the foundation of new funding.
Ultimately, the partnership between a PE/VC firm and its portfolio company must be composed of a balance between vision and implementation – the vision of what a company can and should be, and the acumen to implement the strategic plans that will drive that vision to success. A track record of previous achievement is especially vital, as launching a start-up and leading it from pre-revenue to profitability presents unique challenges when compared to the acumen required to guide an existing organization.
